Biography - Mel Preimesberger

Mel Veal- Preimesberger is an Associate Director of Admission at the University of Southern California.  Her primary duties include the Recruitment and Conversion of Traditionally Underrepresented and First Generation Students Nationwide.

Mel has been a member of the University’s Undergraduate Admission Office for the past several years.  Prior responsibilities have included being the Executive Assistant to former Deans of Admission and Financial Aid, and Director of Special Projects.

Following her graduation from USC’s School of Gerontology,  Mel received her Nursing Home Administrator’s License, and was  employed by Beverly Enterprises  overseeing the operation of a 99 Bed  Geriatric Psychiatric Facility.  Realizing that she enjoyed working directly with families she decided on a career move and began work in the home health care arena where she became a Geriatric Case Manager.

Soon the allure of returning to USC’s campus beckoned and she began her work in college admission, as a project administrator in the Office of Admission.

A few years later, the chance of entrepreneurship presented itself and Mel had the opportunity to own and operate her own Hallmark Card Shop in the Larchmont Village Area of Los Angeles.  It was a dream come true and a great experience because she had graduated Marlborough which was in very close proximity to the store. Operating a business so close to where she spent her high school years afforded her the opportunity to keep in touch with many of her acquaintances. She often joked that going to work each day was like returning to high school.

Mel resigned her position from USC and for 13 years, ran her store, until she decided enough with the Saturdays and Holiday Rush!!!  She recalled having met a customer at the store who was then Dean of Admission and Financial Aid at USC, and  made a few phone calls.  He invited her into to interview and her working relationship with USC was renewed.   Always eager to challenge herself, Mel became involved in many aspects of Undergraduate Admission her responsibilities have included the coordination of athletic student admission, participating in the NCAA Clearinghouse Accreditation Committee,  Working with  the Los Angeles County Office of Education to develop  a Cyber and hard copy of  the  outreach guide I am going to College, working with  various campus stakeholders, being an active supporter of the University’s  Neighborhood Outreach Program for which she was awarded  a grant for  her “African Millennium Pen Pal Project”,  developing various Middle School Outreach Projects and  conducting  Professional Presentations at Conferences for, The National Association for College Admission Counseling and The Western Association for College Admission Counseling.

Mel’s community involvement includes: a past member of The Los Angeles chapter of Jack & Jill, Inc., a past member of the Board of Director’s for The California African American Museum appointed by former Governor Pete Wilson and membership at Saint Bernadette Church.

No stranger to The Black Alumni Association, Mel was involved as member when it was known as Ebonics Support Group and received an outstanding Alumni Award from the organization during that time.  In the past she has laughed and said that her life revolved around USC and the 5 miles surrounding it.  She attended high school 5 miles away….. she met her husband David a fellow Trojan at USC, and she lived most of her adult life 5 miles away.  Though now she says that she has stepped out of her comfort zone and commutes to her home in Napa, California on the Weekends.  Mel and her husband David have carried on the Trojan Tradition by encouraging their two children to embrace all things cardinal and gold. Daughter Calais is a 2003 USC Grad and son Jeremy is a sophomore in the Annenberg School for Communications.
