Brandon Beck ’04
Young Alumni Merit Award
Recognizing the outstanding achievements of young USC alumni
Brandon Beck is the co-founder and CEO of Riot Games, the video game company behind the extremely popular League of Legends. With more than 11 million active players each month, League of Legends is the most-played PC title in North America and Europe, and the fastest-growing game in Asia. Together with co-founder Marc Merrill, Beck formed Riot Games to create high-quality online games with an innovative approach to development, distribution and customer service.
Instead of selling $60 shiny discs, as has been the standard in the games industry for decades, Riot’s approach has been to create games with a superior level of quality and to operate them as free online services, with optional content available for small, incremental amounts. By focusing on delivering a constantly evolving, high-quality experience and establishing a direct relationship with players, Riot has quickly risen to prominence in the games industry, growing from a small start-up to a company with more than 500 worldwide staff and offices in Los Angeles, Dublin, St. Louis and Seoul.
Prior to co-founding Riot, Beck worked as a strategy consultant for Bain & Company where he specialized in media and entertainment, and private equity. Beck, whose experience extends from finance and operations to game development, brings a highly strategic perspective to Riot. He received a 2011 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award, and gave the 2011 commencement speech at the USC Marshall School of Business - just seven years after graduating from there himself!
