Message from USC Lambda LGBTQ+ Alumni AssociationCelebrating Dr. Stanley Harris: A Pioneering Force for LGBTQ+ Advocacy at USC

 A Champion of Change
In the world of academia and beyond, few have championed the cause of LGBTQ+ rights with the fervor and dedication of  Dr. Stanley “Stan” E. Harris. A trailblazer from the beginning, Stan became the first openly LGBTQ+ staff member in USC’s Division of Student Affairs in 1989. In addition, his groundbreaking appointment as chair of the Vice President’s Advisory Group for Gay, Lesbian and Bi Issues marked the start of an enduring legacy—a legacy that continues to shape USC’s vibrant and inclusive community to this day.

A Community Builder
Stan’s commitment to fostering a supportive environment for LGBTQ+ students, faculty and staff at USC led to significant milestones. He founded Gay, Lesbian and Bi Student Services at the Student Counseling Center, and encouraged the university to add “sexual orientation” to its Equal Employment Opportunity Policy. Stan also played a key role in the founding of the USC Lambda LGBTQ+ Alumni Association. In recognition of his achievements, he received the Division of Student Affairs’ Professional Development Award.

An Advocate for LGBTQ+ Students
Stan coordinated Gay, Lesbian and Bi Student Services until he convinced Student Affairs to establish the LGBTQ+ Resources Office, ensuring continued support for students; he also advised this office for decades. Even today, he remains a vital consultant and supporter of USC Lambda, promoting USC’s reputation as a welcoming and supportive university for LGBTQ+ students.

A Mental Health and Education Trailblazer
Beyond his work at USC, Stan’s career as a psychiatrist has been marked by profound contributions to mental health, particularly concerning LGBTQ+ issues. His integrative approach to psychiatric care, honed through years of education and experience, has benefited thousands of students. His dedication to mental health education is evident through his published research, teaching and supervision roles, including his current faculty position as an adjunct clinical professor (voluntary) in the Department of Psychiatry.

A Supporter of the Arts
Stan’s enduring passion for music and the creative arts continues to inspire new opportunities for the LGBTQ+ Trojan community. Thanks to his generous support, the USC Lambda Association will host our inaugural music symposium, which will celebrate and showcase the incredible creativity and artistry of our LGBTQ+ students, in the fall of 2025.

A Leader Who’s Made a Difference
Stan’s impact on the USC LGBTQ+ community extends far beyond his impressive resume. His inspiring work fostered a spirit of acceptance and inclusivity that continues to thrive. His story exemplifies the power of perseverance and advocacy—and the indelible change one individual can make at an institution.
